Salvifici Doloris. Why do we suffer? Why does God allow suffering? Why does God allow good people to suffer? John Paul II, in his apostolic letter Salvifici Doloris, On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, promulgated on February 11, 1984, addressed this question and offered many insights into the problem of suffering. Suffering is something which we will all experience in our lives. In the document, he explores the various ways that we experience suffering in the world, he reflects on the origins of suffering and examines our quest for its meaning, and he shows us how it is only in Christ that we can hope to find any meaning and purpose in our experience of suffering.
