About this Book:

Discover Saint Paul, the bold and passionate preacher of the Gospel, through his many different portrayals in art. In this handsome and well-planned volume, Sister Armanda invites the reader to rediscover and meditate upon the iconography of St. Paul. Facing the Apostle features thirteen images of Saint Paul, ranging from celebrated masterpieces to the works of little-known contemporary artists

Starting with a quotation from Sacred Scripture, she weaves biography, formal analysis, aesthetics, theology, history, and legend together in her chapters. Then each study is completed with a prayer that raises this wealth of information up to the spiritual plane. This is essential. For what good is Christian art if it does not draw us closer to God?
—From the foreword by Michael Morris, OP, Professor of Religion and the Arts, Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Berkeley, California

Features & Benefits:

  • Exquisite art images accompany each meditation.

What Are People Saying about this Title?

"This attractive book by Sister Armanda Santos, FSP, is truly inspirational. It is a lovely combination of artistic reflection, prayerful meditation, and spiritual insight bound to promote better acquaintance with St. Paul. Highly recommended for devotion during the Year of Paul or anytime one wants to ruminate on the impact of this powerful premier apostle."
—Ronald D. Witherup, S.S., Superior General of the Society of St. Sulpice, Professor of Sacred Scripture, and author of Saint Paul: Called to Conversion.

"This precious volume isn’t a manual of history, and it isn’t a book on the history of art. It offers help to the reader who wants to look at art from a spiritual perspective. In fact it will bring the reader to recognize the Christian content of these works of art with particular reference to St. Paul’s life and theology. This book shows, in a fascinating way the real and everlasting connection between art and spirituality."
—Rodolfo Papa, Professor of the History of Aesthetic Theory, Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome
