This beautiful new book will help you draw closer to God.
–from the foreword by James Martin, SJ

About this Book:

Do you desire deeper communication with God? In Human Frailty, Divine Redemption: the Theology and Practice of the Examen, Marko Rupnik explains how the Ignatian practice of the examen leads us to listen to the Spirit. Taking a fresh look at the daily examination of conscience as a spiritual art of prayer and discernment, he explores some of the theological truths that are the basis for this prayer: our call to union with Christ; the place of memory in life-giving relationships; the effect of sin and sinfulness on relationships; the power of the redemption in our life; union with the three Persons of the Trinity; and our need to discover that we are loved.

In the second section, Rupnik describes this examination of conscience as listening to our heart, as a conversation with God, and as contemplation. He explains the multiple benefits of this prayer for growing in self-knowledge, in relationship with God, and in discernment. The examen is an irreplaceable means to nurture a deeper spiritual life and to grow in virtue. It helps us to become aware of how the life and love of God dwell within us. This section ends by describing the particular examination and its benefits.

The third section suggests a method for making the examen. Rupnik concludes this insightful and inspiring book by addressing the situation of those who have not had a living experience of God and wisely guides them in this prayer.

About this Author:

Marko Ivan Rupnik, SJ, is the director of the Centro Aletti, a center for scholars and artists of eastern Europe to meet and study with their western counterparts. A gifted artist and author, he has created mosaics for churches around the world and has written many books, including Discernment: Acquiring the Heart of God. He also teaches at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Saint Anselm. Rupnik's work as an artist and as a theologian has always been complemented by his pastoral work of leading retreats.

What Are People Saying about This Title?

"Too many Christians think they don't pray well. Or that they are praying 'wrong.' Or that everyone else probably has an easier time praying.

"That's why Father Marko Rupnik's new book is a Godsend-almost literally. For it will introduce you to a kind of prayer that anyone can do. Whether you've been on many retreats, or are just beginning to include prayer in your daily life, the examen is a wonderful-and easy-support for your spiritual life.

"Although Catholics had been using this kind of prayer for centuries, it came to be associated with St. Ignatius of Loyola, the sixteenth-century founder of the Jesuit Order, who popularized it. In addition to the Mass, St. Ignatius used to say that the examen is the one prayer that a Jesuit should never omit from his day.

"The examen is a prayer that enables us to see where God has been. And this is usually far easier than recognizing God in the present, since we're typically so distracted and preoccupied by our daily tasks."
James Martin, SJ

"Much of our world rushes along impulsively. We are often so frenetic that we seem out of breath. For Rupnik, whose previous titles include Discernment: Acquiring the Heart of God, this human frailty invites us to relearn and remember the practice of the examen of conscience, for which he presents practical insights for daily living."
George A. Aschenbrenner, SJ

"Father Rupnik helps us appreciate memory for the profound gift it is, as a means for encountering both our triune God and our own selves as created, loved, and sent by Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."
Dennis Hamm, SJ, professor of theology, Creighton University
