From the Encounter the Saints series

About this Book:

Kids ages 8 to 11 can learn about the life of St. John Neumann, the holy man who is the only canonized North American bishop. From very early in his life, John wishes to learn more and grow closer to God. Finishing his studies in his European homeland, he wants nothing more than to be a missionary priest in America. When his ordination is delayed, John sets out for America, relying on God's providence. God watches over John on his many adventures as he travels from Europe to America and becomes a Redemptorist priest. Later, when Pope Pius IX assigns him as the fourth bishop of Philadelphia, he journeys throughout his new diocese to meet people face-to-face.

Listening to the needs of his flock, many of whom were immigrants, he built thirty churches, started the Catholic school system, and was greatly loved by all.

About the Author:

Laura Rhoderica Brown, FSP, loves her community's mission of evangelization. She has served God's people from coast to coast for over 30 years in the Pauline Book & Media centers and has conducted numerous JClub school book fairs in Catholic schools as well as parish exhibits. It is in helping people and in a special way children find the right book that draws them closer to Jesus that gives her life. She believes that the saints are powerful models in our secular world, providing us and our children with real heroes. St. John Neumann became one of Sr. Laura's heroes during her six years of ministry in Philadelphia and led her to write Saint John Neumann: Missionary to Immigrants. She holds an MA in Theology & Pastoral Ministry from Franciscan University.

What Are People Saying about this Title?

"Readers will learn about a time in our nation's history when the Church was persecuted; Neumann ministered in Philadelphia at a time when enemies of Catholicism were burning churches, and the biography emphasizes his courage and dedication in a dangerous era."
-Barb Szysziewicz, OFS, CatholicMom.com Book Notes

Reviews
Peter Gilmore says...
I liked this book a lot. It was a good book. I have certain saint books I like to read and this one was a favorite. I am twelve year old boy who is writing this review so you know what a kid thinks.

Suzanne Mayer says...
This short biography is a testimony to a simple and simply holy man. It is also a wonderful story in which three major themes resonate, one in each of the stages in John Neumann’s life and mission. The early pages portray the warm connectedness of his family and the tradition of faith and devotion that is his parents’ gift and the initiative of his vocation. In true meaning of the word enthusiasm (“divinely inspired”), the middle chapters tell of the young, enthusiastic Redemptive missionary Father John, whose travels cut a path to the many immigrant families dotting the frontier. Finally, through the closing chapters, the young bishop’s zeal does “consume him,” as he takes on the challenging diocese of Philadelphia and the well-told details of it at that time in history. Perhaps the most touching parts as I read them centered on the network of connections that John Neumann formed and supported during his life. His love for family, his care for children and the balance of giftedness with authentic humility present a picture of a man of God worthy of imitation. As part of the Encounter the Saints series, the book is directed to child readers, but as a lover of John Neumann even before his canonization, I found this book allowed him to come alive in so many warm scenes.

Beth Groene says...
Saint John Neumann Missionary to Immigrants is a book that I will be proud to place on the shelf in our school library. It is well written and moves along at a fast pace. Students in grades 4-8 will find it easy to understand, informative, and inspirational. It is a nice addition to our Encounter The Saints series.
