When your loved one falls away from the Church, treat them gently and with great love.

Supplement for Book Clubs and Parish Groups

About this Book:

"The tragedy of God's longing, and of ours, is that even God, despite his omnipotence, chooses not to guarantee our loved one's return to the practice of the faith. God does not force anyone to be in relationship with him; if he did, it would not be a relationship of love." -From the Introduction

When someone you love leaves the Catholic Church, they need a great deal of prayer and love. However, approaching that person with the charity that they deserve and need can be confusing. Sr. Theresa Noble, a former fallen-away Catholic, gently voices ways to talk with and love those who have fallen away.

Starting with her story, Sr. Theresa covers the necessary parts of talking with those who have left the Church, told through the lens of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. She addresses the virtues and traits of the father, and how they should apply to approaching those you love. With gentleness, she encourages you to approach them where they are, while emphasizing the importance of the faith.

Above all, she reminds you that God loves your Prodigal even more than you do. With her gentle encouragement, she will lead you to continue to hope for their conversion, so that you might share the joy of the Father when The Prodigal You Love returns home.

Features & Benefits:

About the Author:

Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP is a former atheist who, thanks to the grace of God, has returned to the faith she was raised in and now tries to help others bring their loved ones back to the faith. A few years after returning to the Church, she heard God calling her, so she left her job in Silicon Valley to join the Daughters of St. Paul. She now lives in Miami, where she prays, evangelizes, bakes bread, and blogs at Pursued by Truth.

What Are People Saying about this Title?

"Taken together, there are enough former Catholics in the United States to be the equivalent of the second largest denomination in the country. Noble was raised Catholic, became an atheist, and later returned to her childhood faith, eventually joining the Daughters of St. Paul. Using her own story as a backdrop, and the parable of the Prodigal Son as a framework, she has written a practical guide to approaching, talking to, and praying for family and friends who have left the Church. More than an instruction manual, and much more widely accessible than a scholarly work of theology, this book provides a spiritually uplifting resource for loving people back into the faith.

Noble's narrative is supported with scripture and Church documents, especially the writings of the three most recent popes, and includes testimony from various individuals who have returned to the Church or helped others on their journeys back home. Her approach emphasizes gentleness, respect, and maintaining the freedom and dignity of others. Some of the topics she covers include common objections to the faith, the importance of the sacraments, and maintaining hope in seemingly impossible situations. Overall, Noble eschews trite platitudes, oversimplifications, and coercion, and instead encourages the living of an attractive life, with Jesus, Mary, and the saints as models. This book is highly recommended for all parish libraries."
- Brian T. Sullivan, Catholic Library World review

Charles says...
Every priest needs to own several copies of this book to distribute to parishioners who are grieving the loss of their childrens faith. This is a profound yet very useful approach from someone who has been there and understands what works and what doesnt. Highly recommended!

Jill says...
If you have loved ones who have left the Church (or are just not into their faith) and you want to help bring them closer to God, this is the book for you. The authors tone is balanced, gentle and clear. I completed each chapter with new insights into the beauty and difficulty in evangelizing ones loved ones. I finished the book with renewed hope, a practical strategy AND I was spiritually nourished.

Liz W says...
Beautifully written book. I am hopeful that I can use some of these principles to help encourage family and loved ones to find their way back to the church. Sr. Theresas story is an inspiration. I could not put his book down!
