Come closer, Jesus, come closer. Selfishness stains my thoughts and my heart. Do not reject me for my weakness. Burn away my selfish desires and open my heart to the needs of others. Pry my hands open and make me prodigal and generous with this world’s goods, that those whom I help here will welcome me into eternity.

In current usage, the term “prudence” is mostly associated with cautiousness, but that is not the true meaning of the word. Prudence is the virtue that helps us make sound judgments, a kind of practical wisdom. It’s called a cardinal virtue (remember those?) because it is a hinge for other virtues. (“Cardinal” comes from cardo, the Latin word for hinge.) With prudence we can judge whether a certain action is virtuous or not.

“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them,” he asks them, “would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?” This is crazy, utterly ridiculous! No sane person would leave ninety-nine strong, healthy sheep at risk in the desert in order to rescue one who is weak and fragile. Who would do such a thing? No one who has any sense. Would I?
