It is true that we are Jesus’ disciples. However, his words can challenge us to consider how committed we are to him. Following Jesus is not a matter of routine nor a dry following of rules. It is not even suffering for the sake of suffering. It is loving Jesus more than we love everyone and everything else. This might seem like a tall order, almost impossible for us to fill. Yes, we love Jesus, but can we love Jesus more than we love all else? Yes we can, with God’s help . . . and God longs to do this!

In the back of my mind was Mother Teresa's canonization this week-end and I was hoping to find a link between some of the things that you wanted to pursue in the newsletter and this great woman of our time.

Miss Manners would have been appalled at the Gospel scene today. Unlike Jesus, she would have advised every “Gentle Reader” to wait to be seated by the host. She may have remarked that a wedding guest list does not commonly include ”the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,” and that it was rude of Jesus to upbraid his host! But Jesus’ wisdom transcends mere etiquette, even if it has profound social implications.

Probably those instances are too numerous to count. We pray with Scripture, we have dined with the Lord at the Eucharist, we have heard him preaching through our priests and bishops. He clearly invites us to repentance and conversion...Jesus invites us to change...
