How to Find Christ in One Another

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 14, 2016

“Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.”At first glance, Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel might startle us. Is Jesus really saying he came to establish division? I thought he was a man of peace, of communion, and of union, certainly not one of division. So what can he possibly mean? Let’s take a closer look. Jesus begins this discourse by saying to his disciples and to us that he has come to set a fire upon the earth.

Excitement for Them, Stress for You: The Start of a New School Year

The beginning of a new school year, like so many other new beginnings, holds challenge, promise, excitement, anticipation… and stress. As a parent, you’re no doubt concerned about myriad things: buying new clothes that your kids won’t grow out of immediately, making sure their backpacks fit them (it’s amazing how much weight kids are supposed to carry in those things!), figuring out the lunchbox routine again, reminding them that pretty soon they’re going to have to go back to a regular bedtime.

“. . . be prepared . . .”

As disciples of Jesus, this command is a priority for us. We can be sure we are fulfilling God’s will if we keep ourselves prepared. But what does it mean? And how can we fulfill it? Jesus tells a story to show us what he means by the command: “Be prepared.” Being prepared means that we have such a relationship with the Father—the Master—that when he is absent, we are “vigilant” for his return.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 31-1916

The story in Luke sounds all too familiar—relatives fighting over an inheritance. Sometimes it seems as if claimants think the money is owed to them. “I want what is coming to me.” Jesus calls it what it is: “greed.” Possessions are what we have, not who we are. In fact, even the poor can be greedy. Jesus reminds us that life, even of the rich, does not consist of possessions. To illustrate his point he tells a story.
