How Stained Glass Transforms

How Stained Glass Transforms

Stained glass windows are an integral part of the ambiance of holy space, and not just because they tell the story of our faith. Something much less didactic, much less cerebral is happening here: the ability of light itself to inspire prayer and meditation.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 24, 2016

I once read that all the sound waves of our earth go out into the cosmos. If we could invent a “collector” strong enough, we could conceivably collect and listen to Jesus, in person, praying the Our Father. Be that as it may, I think the apostles were spellbound to witness Jesus’ absorption and joy in prayer, and as friends would, asked him to show them how to do this. Jesus gave us a precious jewel that can never be surpassed in beauty and meaning when he gave us this prayer.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 17, 2016

We, too, are often plagued by worry and anxiety in our family setting, workplace, and even while praying. How can we escape from our worries and endless activity and find peace of mind and heart? Jesus invites us to pause and make our priorities clear, to seek first his will for us, and to spend some time with him.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 10, 2016

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 10, 2016

When we hear “Good Samaritan,” our hearts are warmed by the gentle kindness of the man who went out of his way to help someone who was down and out. When Jesus’ listeners heard “Samaritan,” they felt at least intense disgust if not outright hatred. Strong animosity existed between the Jews and the Samaritans. They didn’t live together, eat together, pray together, or even communicate. A centuries-long standoff kept the two groups apart. Jesus is saying that the one you hate, the one you think is no good, is the one who will one day save you. In a way, Jesus is describing himself as the Good Samaritan for the human race.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 3, 2016

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 3, 2016

Why does Jesus have to drive his point home so strongly? These disciples do not have the slightest measure of the distractions we have today. Is it really so hard for them to focus, too? Is our common human nature so vulnerable just by itself, without taking into account external circumstances? I know that it takes the Lord a long time to get my attention. And it’s usually not even bad things that distract me. A thousand good things can make me trip—a favor here, a duty there, something to put away, something to write down. . . Jesus uses rather extreme language to get his disciples to focus and concentrate on essentials.
