This Lent discover anew the imitation of Christ

This Lent discover anew the imitation of Christ

With the exception of the Bible, it is perhaps the most widely read spiritual book in the world. It was first published anonymously in 1418 and consists of a series of counsels of perfection that are as relevant today as they were when it was written.

The Most Famous Illuminated Manuscripts in the World

The Most Famous Illuminated Manuscripts in the World

While hundreds (if not thousands) of illuminated manuscripts remain in existence, and still more individual pages have been saved from once-extant manuscripts, there are two complete manuscripts that stand out for their history, beauty, and intricately inspired workmanship: the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.

Going for the Gold: The Origins of Illuminated Manuscripts

Going for the Gold: The Origins of Illuminated Manuscripts

You’ve all seen them: the illuminated manuscripts that come to us from the middle ages, their colors still amazingly vivid after all these centuries, the gold still glowing bright. And you probably picture monks at their individual sloping worktables, painstakingly doing the lettering by the light of a single candle.

Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

The concept is tricky: our God is three, but is also one. I remember as a child my mother explaining the Trinity to me, with an imperfect if obvious analogy: Water is liquid, right? But what about when it's heated and it becomes something else (steam)? Or what about when it's frozen and it becomes something else (ice)? The same thing can manifest in different ways.

Of course, that didn’t exactly clarify things for me… I remember being left vaguely wondering if God manifested himself differently at different temperatures—in the desert, say, or in Antarctica.

But as I matured, I came to see the Holy Spirit, arguably the least understandable of the persons of the Trinity, as the most personal form that God takes. After all, the Holy Spirit is with us and inside us. Every thought we have, every place we go, every moment of our lives, we’re not alone.

Nothing Ordinary Here

Nothing Ordinary Here

The paradox about ordinary grace is that there’s nothing at all that’s ordinary about it. Grace is exceptional, supernatural, the very center of our relationship with God. Grace is the infinite love of God the creator shown to the very limited created one; the peace of God given to the restless; the unmerited favor of God granted to everyone willing to turn to him.
