Novena and prayers to Our Lady Undoer of Knots, beloved devotion of Pope Francis.

About this Book:

With the hope of saving his marriage, a young man sought counsel from a Jesuit priest. During their talks, they would pray together, asking Mary's intercession. As they did so, the priest would untie the knots in the husband's wedding ribbon. Years after the man and his wife had reconciled, their grandson commissioned a painting --Mary Untier of Knots by Johann Schmidtner, which came to symbolize this unique devotion to Our Lady.

Almost three centuries later, another young Jesuit priest, Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis), while studying in Germany, came across a painting that depicts Mary patiently undoing knots in a long cord. He took a copy of the painting to Argentina and began to encourage the devotion. He realized that this picture portrayed how Mary can help us to undo the difficulties and hardships that represent the "knots" in our lives. When he became pope, many more people were inspired to take up devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady Undoer of Knots, and have found consolation and encouragement through her powerful intercession.

Interview with Sister Marianne Lorraine Trouvé, FSP

How did Our Lady Undoer of Knots come into your life? It was around the time Pope Francis was elected that I really became aware of it. Actually, I get a newsletter from the Marian Library, and they had an article about it. Because of the connection with pope, there was a lot of information coming out about it. And then I started to pray the prayer, too, and I found that it was beneficial?some of the things I was praying for happened.

Who do you think will be interested in this novena and these prayers? For a lot of us, there can be situations that we don?t know what to do with. People can relate to Our Lady Undoer of Knots because we all have troubles, we all deal with difficult situations. And this prayer meets people where they?re at. All the things that are impossible for us to do?Mary can do. Seeing her with the knots is a concrete image that people can relate to. It?s a concrete image that people can relate to.

And you said that it has worked for you. Yes. My brother died in January. And this rosary came in the mail for me, it had the image of Our Lady Undoer of Knots at the center, and so I started the novena: Mary was letting me know that she was there for me. And the situation worked itself out with the least amount of pain and distress.

There is something intrinsically comforting about an image of our mother helping us untie all the craziness that we have in our lives. Yes: people can relate to it. She?s truly a motherly figure. Even people who aren?t Catholic can find some comfort here, there?s that appeal. And people who already have a devotion to Mary, who already pray the rosary, these are people who will find it helpful. It?s responding to a real pastoral need: there?s such interest now in both the pope and in Mary, and this is a good way to connect them. It just seems very timely.

It?s a beautiful painting and a beautiful image. But it goes deeper than that; say something about what?s behind the image. So, yes: it?s not just a matter of comfort; there?s a strong theological basis for this devotion as well, a grounding in theology and scripture. St. Iraneaus made the comparison between Eve and Mary, saying that the knot tied by Eve?s disobedience was untied by Mary?s obedience. What is there in the New Testament is key, it?s important. And people can understand that, even if their faith formation is spotty. Scripture scholars are reclaiming the role of Eve, the mother of all living beings, of the human race; we have two different mothers. It casts a more positive light on women and their role in scripture.

I have prayed to Our Lady Undoer of Knots for many years and encouraged other to do so but this little booklet is a Godsend. It contains everything you need plus the prayer by Pope Francis to Her. It is small enough to fit into handbags or pockets so you need never be without it. I will be giving it to all my friends in future.
