About this Book:

In this compelling biography, Madeline Nugent unfolds the story of St. Clare and her sisters. Inspired by St. Francis and his ideal of holy poverty, Clare left everything to follow Christ. This decision meant conflict with her family and an uncertain future, but Clare never wavered. Her small group of followers took root, and the new foundation, eventually called the Poor Clares, flowered throughout the world.

Nugent bases her work on exterior research, time spent in Assisi, and interviews with Franciscan experts. On this solid foundation, she builds Clare's story through vignettes of various characters, some historical, some fictional, creating an authentic biography with the appeal of a novel.

About the Author:

Madeline Pecora Nugent, SFO, has been writing for forty years. She is the author of many articles, booklets and columns as well as Saint Anthony: Word of Fire, Fire of Light, also published by Pauline Books and Media.

What Are People Saying about this Title?

"I love reading about the saints. Some biographies, though, can be somewhat dry. This is could have been the case with a saint such as Clare of Assisi who lived many, many years ago. With such saints there are often lacks of verifiable facts that have been passed down to us throughout the centuries.

"Historical novels, on the other hand, while not dry, leave the reader wondering how to separate truth from fiction. Ms. Nugent has bridged the two genres in a wonderful way. Though the story flows like a novel there is never any question as to which characters and events are facts and which are used just to facilitate the telling of the story. She accomplishes this by adding chapter notes to the end of the book. In these notes she clearly and scrupulously separates know facts from fiction. Well done!"
